5 Ways to Kick Psoriasis Stigma to the Curb

Even on the best of days, psoriasis can be tough. Sometimes people wonder out loud "Can you catch psoriasis?" Other times it’s a second glance from a stranger. More than 8 million people in the U.S. experience psoriasis, but together, we can change the stigma one step at a time. Here are three ways to get you started on your journey to demystify this often misunderstood condition.

  1. Share your story. – Psoriasis may be a big part of your life, but the people around you might not even realize they know someone with an ongoing skin condition. If you’re comfortable doing so, open up about your experience with psoriasis, frustrating symptoms or severe psoriasis treatments. Explain what it’s like to have psoriasis on your face or scalp or hands. Then, explain how it isn’t contagious; it’s just a part of who you are. Sharing your story can help them understand psoriasis more.

  2. Embrace your skin. – You can take proactive steps toward positive, lasting change. Start by caring for your skin daily with the MetaDerm® Skin Health System. It’s natural and effective, so it’s good for your skin and for your peace of mind. Loving your skin can help change your attitude about your psoriasis, and that attitude can spread to those around you.

  3. Raise awareness. – Post about Psoriasis Awareness Month on Facebook, donate to a skin condition organization like the National Psoriasis Foundation, or share educational articles with friends and family. These are simple and impactful ways to help eradicate the stigma and, ultimately, make life easier for others living with psoriasis.

While we’re still trying to cure psoriasis, we have the power to change people’s perceptions of it, and that change starts with you.
